Jordan Discovery Tour 8 Day Itinerary

Amman, the capital of Jordan.  It has been destroyed by many earthquakes and natural disasters.  It remained a small village until 1878.  Ottoman records show that in 1906, 5000 Cirassians were living there, and almost no one spoke Arabic. When the railway was built connecting Amman to Damascus the city grew.  There are over 4 million people living there today.  The Roman Theater is a site to see, and can hold over 6000 people, it is still being used today for sporting and cultural events. Citadel hill holds the Temple of Hercules, it is a very important religious and military site.

Dead Sea which happens to be the lowest point on Earth, where no other living thing can survive in its waters, because of the heavy salt content.

Pella is the site of ancient ruins in the North of Jordan.  The archaeologists are still excavating
today.  One of Christianities oldest churches reside here.

At Umm Qays you can see the Northern Jordan Valley, the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee.

Jerash grows a variety of crops due to its fertile soil.  It is also the site of the ruins of the Greco- Roman city of Gerasa.  Excavations show that Jerash was inhabited in the Bronze Age 3200 B.C.- 1200 B.C.

Ajloun is a hilly town in Northern Jordan, and is famous for the ruins that are there.  On the site of an old monastery you can find the Ajloun Castle.  The castle used to control traffic from the road connecting Damascus and Egypt.

Mabada is located in central Jordan.  It is well known for its Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics.  There is a large Byzantine mosaic of the Holy Land.

Petra is an inheritance that has been left by the Nabateans who were brave warriors and very industrious.  They were also famous for their graffiti. The Nabateans settled in southern Jordan more than 2000 years ago.  Petra is unusual because of its location in the middle of the desert.  Depending on the time of day the mountains change color from pink to dark red, purple or orange. From the main entrance, the visitors will pass between the cliffs through the amazing Siq, a huge crack in the sandstone 1,2 km. long. There are hundreds of buildings, facades, crypts, baths, mourning halls, temples, and, of course, the Roman theater that has three thousand seats and it was built in the 1st century B.C.
Wadi Rum has been home to the Bedouins for hundreds of years.  It has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times.  There are huge rock formations that make up Wadi Rum.

  •  It is in your own interest as you are expected to carry your own luggage.
  • Suitcases are definitely not recommended for our trips!  It is also important that your bags can be locked, as on some buses it may be necessary to store your luggage separately from the group.
  • The smaller your bag is, the better, for when it comes to travelling it's usually only the smaller bags that will fit into the storage areas. So to get maximum comfort, pack small and light!
  • You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera. ... etc., for day walks and day trips.
  • Temperatures in Jordan can be hot and with little rain. This can become extreme towards and during the summer months of May to August. In the months of November to March it can be very cool at night particularly in the desert where night temperatures can drop to 5C or less. Even in the hot months out in the desert it can get cold at night.
Jordan is an Islamic nation and tends to be quite conservative so you should dress accordingly.
  • As a general guideline, shoulders and knees should be covered at all times.
  • The wearing of shorts is not allowed away from the beach or pool as it will restrict your entry into buildings of a religious nature and family homes.
  • A light water and windproof jacket is useful and a hat essential.
  • From mid-November to late February a sleeping bag is essential for your nights in the desert. At other times a sleeping sheet will suffice.
  • Loose, lightweight, long clothing is both respectful and cool in the predominantly hot climate.
